Anybody know how to fix a battery-powered alarm clock that suffered blunt trauma (when a cat knocked it off the dresser) and now goes off at about 1/3 the original volume?

    relaying for a friend
...[friend's] mom has been making fantastic one of a kind bags
and purses -- and now you can check them out (and buy them) online!
Her shop is up and running at at ninamade.etsy.com, with new stock
added regularly.  Please pass along the link to any friends looking
for a stylish, hip, funky, classy, and eye catching bag.  Her artist
statement gives a flavor of her work:

Every NinaMade bag is a unique creation. I design and sew each bag by
hand out of "upcycled" materials that I have collected over the past
thirty years. Constructed primarily from vintage fabrics, leathers,
and vinyls, my bags combine contrasting textures, colors, and
materials into original creations. Bags might juxtapose modern
industrial materials, such as deconstructed advertising banners, with
vintage bark cloth, or combine salvaged leather with contemporary
comic book influenced fabric. Designs vary by shape and function,
including purses, messenger, laptop, tote, diaper, and shopping bags.

    RIP Stephanie Tubbs Jones
I don't know that much about the rest of her Congressional record, but I tuned into C-Span to watch her (with Sen. Boxer) formally contest the 2004 election results...it was an important speaking of truth to power.

    Crazy Wingnut Alert

I'm sure that lots of the books I loved as a kid were written by people whose worldviews I would now find totally repulsive, and I already knew that Orson Scott Card was a Mormon, but DAMN.

    Myrmidons?

I was reading an article on the Boston Herald website about allegations that the ethanol-blend fuel now used in boats is bad for their engines.  And then there was the following comment:

And once again, the highly intelligent and sophisticated readers of the Herald miss the point entirely! The key is right thre in the first three words of the article! "An earth-friendly". It's the green you idiots. This go-green BS is the biggest hoax perpetuated on society ever. All these movements, all these crusades, all this screeming and wailing and gnashing of teeth trying to save everything from the snail darter, to the polar bear, to the manatee, to the sky, to the water is all a bunch of BS being sold by a bunch of has-been politicos, whacked out students, and left over myrmidons from the communist party. They don't REALLY give a damn about this nonsence. The real goal is to destroy capitalism and those that are successful within it. That makes anyone with a boat not a victim, but a target! Can't anyone see that?!

    #338078 - Jul 28, 2008 3:24 PM EDT

And now I'm really torn, because I'm not sure whether destruction of capitalism is my goal as an enviro, or not.

Why is it that in men's beach volleyball, the competitors wear a shirt and shorts, but in the women's division of the same sport, they wear bikinis?

it shouldn't take up all of the movement's resources
it benefits rich people the most
it privileges one family structure above others unduly
it may fuck up and/or have fucked up various national and local elections
    etc

progress on same-sex marriage is still great to see.

Accordingly, in light of the conclusions we reach concerning the constitutional questions brought to us for resolution, we determine that the language of section 300 limiting the designation of marriage to a union “between a man and a woman” is unconstitutional and must be stricken from the statute, and that the remaining statutory language must be understood as making the designation of marriage available both to opposite-sex and same-sex couples.  In addition, because the limitation of marriage to opposite-sex couples imposed by section 308.5 can have no constitutionally permissible effect in light of the constitutional conclusions set forth in this opinion, that provision cannot stand.
